Ice Storm 2003
Feb. 25, 2003
Monday, Feb. 24 was supposed to be a cold day. However, the forecast did not predict
freezing rain, sleet, hail and even a bit of snow, which started falling in the afternoon.
By rush hour the roads were clogged with traffic slowing to a crawl. Commutes home were
taking 2 to 4 times their normal time. Luckily Penny and I both made it home OK.
The next morning we awoke to a world covered in ice. Obviously not very safe driving
conditions, we called work several times to make sure that meetings or appointments were
called off. They were, so could sit out the storm.
We tentatively walked around the house to survey the scene and you can see the photos here.
Walking was a chore, but we did OK, probably due to our recent experience doing the same
thing in Norway. However, there were no Norwegian workers with gravel buckets making the
sidewalks safe for us.
