Our Trip to Big Bend
At long last, here are the pictures that we took during our October trip to Big Bend. We
had 5 hiking days planned and I think we made the most of it, particularly in light of the
difficulty that we had getting on the road Saturday to start our trip.
The night before our trip a big storm blew through and scared the dogs silly. That kept us
up late. The next morning we found one of the dogs off in the nature preserve behind our
home. Turns out a section of fence fell down overnight. Already late, we're out there
hammering fence back together. Then we can't find one of our cats and search all over
before finding her. Now, out on the road, we witness the aftermath of an accident and
stop to report it via 911. Along the way, Penny almost loses a contact while driving.
The trip seems doomed.
We get to Big Bend about 4-6 hours later than planned. Before we reach the park boundary
it's already pitch dark, so we find our way to the park hotel without seeing a bit of
scenery. After seeing the road up the mountain and down the basin we later decide maybe
that was a good thing, as it is picturesque and little scary!
We definately plan on returning to Big Bend some time in the future. Perhaps next time
we'll plan on visiting during the spring to try and catch some of the wildflowers in
bloom.
We have pictures for each day of our trip:
Here's Penny at the Persimmon Gap entrance sign. We took this one as we were leaving. |
Here I am by the park entrance sign. We're about 60-70 miles from ANYTHING. |
This was the view from our lodge balcony. Not too shabby. Emery Peak is to the right. |
The road leading up to the basin warns about possible bear or mountain lion encounters. |
The ranger station at the hotel has a map of recent mountain lion and bear sightings. We didn't see any. |
Here is a Pinyon Pine near our room. This is one of the more common trees in the Chisos Basin. |
The tall Sotol is one of the more common plants in Big Bend, particularly the lower elevations. |
View of Casa Grande from the hotel parking area. Some of the later photos, like this one, appear blurred due to a smudge on the camera lens. |
